White After Labor Day: How to Wear It

11:54:00 PM

Taking a sharp detour from last week's post which was all about my love for saturated reds and black. Today, I'm talking about Whites! Why it's definitely acceptble to wear them past Labor Day. And how to give them that warm Fall/Winter Vibe.

White After Labor Day: How did the rule get started?
Well, to be honest, I'm not sure that anyone knows the exact moment or reason this rule was born. There is some discussion on functionality. Wearing white and paler colors in the summer heat absorbs less sun and thus keeps you cooler. Which would have been paramount before daisy dukes and tank tops were socially acceptable.

But the main reason that I have read over an over through the last few years, has to do with wealth and class. Some say, it was a cold war between old money and the nouveau riche. The historically wealthy wanted to distinguish themselves from those that bought their way into society. And what better way to do that than set up arbitrary fashion rules that only insiders would know about or care to follow.

Others say that wearing white showed your wealth.  Because, having the money to 'summer' elsewhere, meant you could escape the dirt and grime of the city and work life. No need for practical colors or fabrics when you're free to spend your days at your leisure.

However white came to be banned, I think we can all agree that the original reasons are no longer justifiable. Textiles, social standards (and laundering methods) have come a long way over the last century. And brands that epitomize luxury and tradition have been releasing winter whites for years.

So yes, it is ok to wear white ALL year round.

Now, how do you work it into the colder months?
Play with textures, heavier fabrics and layering. Throw on some neutral colored accessories and shoes. And you've created the perfect winter white look. Or in my case 'Fall White' look.

I've pulled together some of my favorite winter white pieces for you here. Just click on the item to shop.

This is the first week that it's felt like Fall in Louisiana. Chilly in the mornings and warm and sunny in the afternoon. Which is why I opted for casual distressed jeans, booties and a warm cardigan over a flowy white tank.

This particular cardigan was sent to me by Shein to share with you all. And I love it. Funny enough, I've had my eye on it for years. I think I've even linked the camel toned version of it in wish lists throughout the last year. And now that I finally have my hands on it, I'm pretty excited.

It's a perfect fit. Warm. And a gorgeous shade of grey. The ONLY downside, is those pocket flaps are purely decoration. But, for the price I'm completely ok with it! You can check it out HERE. And the rest of my outfit in the widget below.

The white purse is by Local Louisiana designer, Savvy Root.
